A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Fabric Lantern Size for Your Room

When it comes to interior decor, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambience of a room. Among the many options available, fabric lanterns have gained popularity for their ability to add a touch of elegance and warmth to any space. However, selecting the right size of fabric lantern for your room can be a bit of a challenge. Fear not, as we're here to guide you through the process of choosing the perfect fabric lantern sizes to illuminate your living space with style and functionality.

To begin, browse our available sizes

Having a desired size in mind can help to dictate both the direction of your project and the style of the room that the lighting will sit in. It can be difficult to determine how the size appears in real life when viewing images online, so we've broken down our size guide for you & shown the lanterns in comparison to one another;

A step-by-step guide for the planning process

01. Once you have chosen your desired size we recommend creating a cardboard template.

02. Trace out the diameter of the lantern (don't be afraid to patchwork materials lying around your home) things that work well would be cardboard or pattern paper. Anything that is able to hold a decent form whilst you suspend it within the desired space.  Our recommendation is to always make two or more sizes.

03. The next part of this process is a two-man job. Once your template has been made, one person will hold it in place and the other will step back to visualise in order to confirm proportion, height & placement. We suggest holding it in the exact position that you intend for it to live in, that way your final decision will be accurate.

04. Play with proportion. By experimenting with varying sizes, you can create really interesting interiors, so keep an open mind when creating your templates and make a few size variations just to be safe!

Sibella’s Top Tip: One of her favourite ways to display the Dampier is to attach it flush to the ceiling, as in her home - most of the ceilings only go up about 2.4m. So if you’re in a similar situation, feel free to adopt this technique

Consider the Room's Existing Interior

There are many things to consider when planning out your lantern installation.

It is important to ask yourself...

What is in the room?

01. First consider, how many are you planning on having?  Two or more can create a beautiful layered look and allow for you to experiment with varying heights & sizes.

02. Where will they be situated? Are they going to be the central feature above a dining table? Or directly above a bed? Will these factors impact your mobility within an interior? When considering these factors, it is important to think about the height at which you’re planning on hanging them. A really low suspension can create a modern, cosy atmosphere & makes for a unique finish.

03. Take note of any architectural features, such as alcoves or beams, windows or door frames - that may influence the placement of the light fixtures. For example, will they be symmetrical to a window?

04. To create visually interesting interiors, we suggest experimenting with placement. Lights don't always have to be placed directly in the centre of a room, in fact, having asymmetrical qualities is all the more exciting if you want to make the most of your fabric lantern. This can easily be achieved by using a lighting chord.

Ceiling Height Matters (to an extent)

The height of your ceiling can be important to consider when choosing fabric lantern sizes, however, we don’t always recommend sticking to tradition.

It’s often said that for smaller rooms with standard ceiling heights, 2.4 - 3m, opt for lanterns that are smaller in size. This can be true, however, we believe in breaking these rules as larger sizes create more visual interest and become the statement piece of your room.

When considering taller ceilings, (3m and above) you can comfortably accommodate larger lanterns that create a grander visual impact without feeling cramped.

In this instance, we recommend having two or more! Layer multiple lanterns across the room, creating a rich and detailed space that allows for varied flows of light to run through the room. Creating a more playful & whimsical atmosphere.

Our Recommendations for Placement

& how to utilise layered lighting

An initial consideration when playing around with placement is how many lanterns you intend to use. Will it be a large statement piece or will it consist of multiple smaller lights that trail throughout the room?
Layering lighting is a creative way to add visual interest to any setting, just keep in mind to ensure that the sizes you choose are harmonious. Vary the heights of the lanterns to create depth and intrigue without creating a cluttered appearance.

Your Lantern Care Guide

Caring for fabric lanterns ensures their longevity and continued beauty as cherished decor elements in your home. Our lanterns are hand made from finest quality cotton and cane to provide the perfect ambient glow to any space. With this delicate material, cleaning can feel as though it’s a daunting task, as the lanterns can attract dust when installed in most interior spaces. A common mistake is using soap & water to clean them, which in some cases can create mould!
The most efficient way to clean them is to simply detach them from your fittings and give them a good brushing with a soft bristled hat brush, or something similar. Other options for cleaning tools can be a vacuum cleaner's upholstery attachment, a duster or a dry microfiber cloth. This will easily cling to any dust or dirt that has stuck to the fabric and due to the delicacy, will ensure that they are not damaged in any way.

Ultimately, your personal preferences should guide your decision. If you're drawn to a specific lantern size, trust your instincts. After all, your home should reflect your personality and taste.
In the world of interior design, the right lantern sizes can transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary. By considering the room's features, ceiling height, and the intended purpose of the lantern, you can confidently choose sizes that enhance the ambience, style, and functionality of your living spaces. Whether you're aiming for cozy intimacy or striking grandeur, the perfect fabric lantern awaits to light up your space in just the right way.
